Abortion Education:
Abortion Considerations
Abortion may seem like a straightforward decision, however, there are several important things to consider before you get an abortion:
- Procedure type (medical* vs. surgical abortion)
- Cost (varies according to procedure type)
- Pain (during and after procedure)
- Risks (physical, emotional, relational)
- Legality (abortion laws in Tennessee)
According to Tennessee law, abortion is completely illegal and unavailable in our state. It is also illegal to order the abortion pill online in Tennessee or to have it mailed to your house. If you are considering travelling out of state for an abortion or to obtain the abortion pill, you will need an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy, detect a fetal heartbeat, and see how far along you are. We are here to help you make an informed decision that is right for you.
Abortion Pill Information
The abortion pill (medical abortion), also known as Plan C, can be used up to 10 weeks gestation. The process begins with confirmation of pregnancy, which includes a positive pregnancy test and ultrasound to determine gestational age and viability. This will determine if the fetus is in the uterus and has a heartbeat. Additionally, 25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage; if you miscarry the abortion pill would not be necessary. We can provide you with a free confirmation at each of our clinics.
The next step involves taking a series of pills. The first pill works by blocking the effects of progesterone, the hormone which aids in the fetus' growth and development. Two days later, you take the second pill which works by causing contractions in order to deliver the deceased fetus. This is also called self-managed abortion. To learn more about the abortion pill, please read here: Education on Abortion.
*CAUTION: The abortion pill (or Plan C) is NOT recommended and can be dangerous if you have a tubal pregnancy. The abortion pill (Plan C) is also not recommended for women whose last menstrual cycle is greater than 10 weeks.
Question: What if I have already taken the first dose of the abortion pill (a.k.a. Plan C),
but then change my mind?
Answer: It may not be too late!
Plan B
Question: Is the abortion pill the same thing as the morning after pill (Plan B)?
Answer: No, Plan B, sometimes called the morning after pill, is actually an emergency contraceptive.
Pregnancy Testing:
What we offer - our services include FREE lab quality pregnancy tests with instant, same day results available at any of our clinics. Make an appointment today to confirm your pregnancy. Once you have a positive pregnancy test result, one of our nurses will evaluate your case and determine your eligibility for an ultrasound.
Medical/Pregnancy Consultation:
One of the best choices you can make when faced with an unplanned pregnancy is the choice to discuss your options in a safe, confidential setting. Our medical staff is available to consult with you about your medical options. There is no charge or financial obligation for these services. To ensure your comfort and well-being, we have female nurses and medical personnel available that understand your situation. Birth Choice has trained staff experienced in serving those facing the challenges pregnancy can bring.
Whether you are considering abortion, adoption or parenting, making the right choice takes time. Allow yourself time to objectively learn all the facts and weigh all your options at a place that won’t profit from your ultimate decision. All of the services offered at Birth Choice are free and confidential. Consequently, we do not profit from any decision our clients make. Abortion clinics in Illinois or other states, however, charge for their services and may profit from your decision. Birth Choice does not perform or refer for abortion services.
Don’t allow anyone to rush you or pressure you in the decision-making process as this is your private choice. We are here to give you the support and information that can help you in this process. Remember, your health both now and in the future may depend on the pregnancy choices you make.
Ultrasound
If you are considering abortion, there are important details you need to know in order to protect yourself. Every woman considering abortion needs an ultrasound to confirm the location of the fetus (whether or not the fetus is inside the uterus), the presence or absence of a heartbeat, and the age of the fetus. Birth Choice offers ultrasounds free of charge. However, abortion clinics in Illinois and abortion referral clinics in Memphis and Nashville do not provide free ultrasounds with no strings attached. Your positive pregnancy test and evaluation by one of our nurses determines your eligibility for an ultrasound.
