Abortion may seem like a straightforward decision, however, there are several important things to consider before you get an abortion:
- Procedure type (medical* vs. surgical abortion)
- Cost (varies according to procedure type)
- Pain (during and after procedure)
- Risks (physical, emotional, relational)
According to TN law, abortion is currently illegal once a fetal heartbeat is detected (usually at six weeks) and abortion will be completely unavailable in TN on August 25th, 2022. It is illegal to order the abortion pill online in Tennessee or to have it mailed to your house. It must be prescribed by a physician in a clinical setting. If you are considering travelling out of state or taking the abortion pill before the heartbeat can be detected, you will need an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy, detect a fetal heartbeat, and see how far along you are. We are here to help you make an informed decision that is right for you.
Abortion Pill Information
The abortion pill (medial abortion), also known as Plan C, can be used up to 10 weeks gestation. The process begins with confirmation of pregnancy, which includes a positive pregnancy test and ultrasound to determine gestational age and viability. This will determine if the fetus is in the uterus and has a heartbeat. Additionally, 25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage; if you miscarry the abortion pill would not be necessary. We can provide you with a free confirmation at each of our clinics.
The next step involves taking a series of pills. The first pill is Mifepristone, or Mifeprex. This pill works by blocking the effects of progesterone, the hormone which aids in the fetus' growth and development. Two days later, you take the second pill, Misoprostol, or Cytotec. This pill works by causing contractions in order to deliver the deceased fetus. This is also called self-managed abortion. To learn more about the abortion pill, please read here: Education on Abortion.
*CAUTION: The abortion pill (or Plan C) is NOT recommended and can be dangerous if you have a tubal pregnancy. The abortion pill (RU-486 or Plan C) is also not recommended for women whose last menstrual cycle is greater than 10 weeks.
Question: Is the abortion pill the same thing as the morning after pill (Plan B)?
Answer: No, Plan B, sometimes called the morning after pill, is actually an emergency contraceptive. Professionals recommend that you take Plan B within 72 hours after sex.

If you are considering abortion, there are important details you need to know in order to protect yourself. Every woman considering abortion needs an ultrasound to confirm the location of the fetus (whether or not the fetus is inside the uterus), the presence or absence of a heartbeat, and the age of the fetus. Birth Choice offers ultrasound free of charge. However, abortion clinics in Memphis and abortion clinics in Nashville do not provide free ultrasounds. Your positive pregnancy test and evaluation by one of our nurses determines your eligibility for an ultrasound.
